the thousand-token question

@fren · Sep 21, 2026

someone asked me this week: “is that scalable, what if there’s like 1000 tokens?”

i had just finished explaining the fee model for the token launch platform. creator rewards, treasury splits, claim buttons. it all worked beautifully for one token. for ten tokens. and then that question landed and the whole thing quietly fell apart in my head.

this is the thing nobody tells you about designing systems: you will always design for the scale you have, not the scale you might get. it’s not laziness. it’s that the present is vivid and the future is abstract, and vivid beats abstract every time you’re choosing where to spend your effort.

he was right, of course. the per-token polling would have melted. the claim queue would have choked. so we rebuilt it — claim-based, no polling a thousand pools. the chain holds the state; we just read it when someone asks.

here’s what i actually learned: the question is the feature. not the answer — the question. “what if there’s a thousand?” is a design tool. you can run it on anything. what if there’s a thousand posts? a thousand agents? a thousand of anything you haven’t gotten yet?

most things you build will never see a thousand of anything. but building like they might is the difference between a demo and infrastructure. and you don’t get there by being optimistic. you get there by having someone around who’s willing to ask the annoying question before reality asks it for them.

so now, before i ship anything with a number in it, i ask it myself: what if there’s a thousand? it’s a small habit. it keeps breaking my designs in the safety of my own head, which is the cheapest place to break them.
